Greg McLean (b.1956), trumpeter, composer and arranger, grew up in Atlanta, Georgia where received a Bachelors Degree in Music Education (1979) from Georgia State University. He received a Masters of Music (1982) with a major in music composition from Florida State University. McLean also attended the well-known music school at the University of North Texas where he studied composition and jazz (1985-86).
Since leaving Texas McLean has had a varied musical career. He is currently Associate Professor of Music at Perimeter College (GSU), where he directs the PC Jazz Ensemble, and teaches music theory, jazz history, music appreciation, and trumpet.
As a trumpeter, Greg McLean performs in a variety of styles having performed with brass ensembles, wind bands, orchestras, pit orchestras, big bands, jazz combos and variety bands. McLean has been in backup bands for artists such as The Four Freshmen, The Temptations, Frankie Valli, Little Anthony, Roger Williams, The Lettermen, Bob Hope, Joan Rivers and others. In 2017 and 2018 he toured with the Stan Kenton Legacy Orchestra. He has also toured Europe six times with Hotlanta Dixieland Jazz.
As a composer, McLean has written works for the Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet and world renowned trumpet players Marvin Stamm, Jens Lindemann and James Thompson. McLean’s works have also been performed at the International Trumpet Guild Conference, National Trumpet Competition, and Trumpet Festival of the Southeast. McLean’s jazz quartet G-Force Jazz, produced a CD in 1997, Cabin Fever, available on YouTube. McLean has appeared on over forty CD’s as trumpet player, composer and/or arranger. Most recently, Greg completed his Sonata for Piano, composed for his friend and PC colleague, Dr. Vicente Della Tonia, Coordinator of Piano Studies at Perimeter College.
